If the toe of the club is off the ground through impact your shots will go the right whatever you might try and do about it. Conversely if the heel of the club is "digging" into the ground through impact your shots will go left whatever you might try and do about it.
This is what you do ! Use only a 5 or 6 Iron. Apply a strip of masking tape firmly to the sole of the club as shown in the diagram.Mark the centre of the faced scored area with a pen/pencil across the middle of the sole.Using a thin sheet of plywood or similar, strike an imaginary ball lying on the plywood with a normal, full, free swingLook at the sole of the club and note where the scuff mark on the masking tap is locatedRepeat this 4 or 5 times to determine the average position of the scuff mark.Measure and note the distance of the centre of the scuff mark from the face centre line
Calculate the change in required lie angle as follows:-
For each 1/4 inch the point of sole impact (the scuff mark) is on the toe side of the centre line, the correct lie will be 1 degree more upright than the club used. Conversely, for every 1/4 inch the average scuff mark lies to the heel side of the centre line, the club must be 1 degree flatter in lie.
If a lie change is required then send them to me where they will be adjusted in a special loft and lie machine.
