DIY CLUBFITTING

There are certain things about your own clubs that you can check in the comfort of your own home. These are Shaft lengthGrip size Lie Angle

The Impact of Shaft Length

The centre of gravity of the clubface is the "sweet spot" (a pinhead in size)and will produce the maximum distance when the ball is struck from here. Miss the sweetspot with a driver/fairway metal by half an inch and you will lose 6 to 7% of the distance the clubhead is capable of producing. Around 5% is the loss with an Iron.

Your ablity to hit the ball out of the sweet spot is totally related to shaft length - the shorter the shaft the easier it is to achieve this which is why most people's favourite club is either their 5 or 7 Wood !

The average driver length on the US Tour over the past 2 years has been 43.5 to 44.5 inches. NOT the 45 inches and sometimes 46 ins you buy when you opt for an off the shelf driver (in spite of what the adverts might say !)

Shaft length - is measured from the heel of the club to the end of the grip.
